Pregnancy is just so lovely and lovely, yet like all things in life, there are its not-so-lovely sides as well. Two of the most common issues most pregnant women have are nausea and vomiting, which happen specifically during the first three months. Some women are merely queasy, yet again some women cannot eat, cannot drink, or even function well within the office because they’re incessantly nagged with this nauseating sensation.

This is where the first over-the-counter nausea treatment for all of us, that being Emetrol, typically enters the picture. The majority of women are curious if it is safe to take Emetrol when pregnant, how even theoretically it is supposed to even make a difference, and does it indeed even even treat morning sickness or not.

What is Emetrol

What is Emetrol

Emetrol is an over-the-counter (OTC) illness medication that has existed for many decades. It’s utilized most frequently to alleviate nausea and stomach discomfort caused by:

  • Morning sickness pregnancy
  • Stomach flu
  • Overabundance of food and alcohol
  • Motion sickness

Unlike the case with prescription drugs, however, Emetrol is an over-the-counter drug, and so you will not require a doctor’s prescription in order to use it.

Emetrol does contain active ingredients, though, namely phosphorated carbohydrates and they include:

  • Dextrose (glucose)
  • Fructose
  • Phosphoric acid

Together, all these mixed ingredients produce the effect of soothing stomach discomfort and relieving nausea.

How Does Emetrol Work

Emetrol is really not that difficult to understand in its mechanism. The phosphorated carbohydrate solution eases the nausea and stomach by:

  • Releasing abnormally contracting stomach muscles.
  • Reducing inflammation of the stomach lining.
  • Having an effect on a mild sugar high within the body, at times having the strength of eliminating pregnancy-induced nausea low blood sugar.

In contrast to most anti-nausea drugs, Emetrol has no aspirin, antihistamines, or caffeine, and therefore is as unlike most over-the-counter nausea medication as possible.

Is Emetrol Safe While Pregnant

This is the largest concern most pregnant women will have.

Emetrol can be used for pregnancy nausea and vomiting as needed. It’s an older over-the-counter liquid. Of course, like anything you use while pregnant, there are a few things you want to know:

  • Discuss with your doctor: Even though Emetrol is not prescription strength, you always want to discuss it with your doctor when you’re using it while pregnant.
  • Use the dose: Overdose will result in stomach discomfort or too much sugar consumption.
  • Monitor other states: With diabetes, gestational diabetes, or fructose intolerance, use Emetrol according to your physician’s wishes.

Emetrol can safely be administered short-term for pregnancy morning sickness when non-medication methods such as ginger or food modification are ineffective.

Administration of Emetrol During Pregnancy

Administration of Emetrol During Pregnancy

Adult dose of Emetrol is recommended as:

  • One or two tablespoons (15-30 mL) at the beginning of nausea.
  • Repeat as needed in 15 minutes.
  • Not more than five doses in an hour.
  • Not any other liquid 15 minutes before Emetrol.
  • Only consume amounts in the bottle for pregnant women and never more than indicated.

Possible Side Effects of Emetrol

Emetrol performs as advertised in most cases, and is well tolerated as any medicine. Side effects do happen, however. They are:

  • Stomach cramping
  • Full doses of diarrhea
  • Spiking blood sugar (most apparent in the woman with gestational diabetes)
  • Rear allergic reaction (hives, tingling sensation, swelling)

In the worst possible circumstance, if you somehow manage to get some wacky effect, stop and tell your doctor at once.

Alternatives to Emetrol for Pregnancy Nausea

If you prefer not to use drugs, there are a number of other things that will help you limit nausea during pregnancy:

  • Ginger tea or ginger candies – both have a natural anti-nausea ingredient
  • Vitamin B6 pills or capsules – as directed by your doctor
  • Small amounts of food often – so the stomach is never empty
  • Liquid – water or electrolyte drinks
  • Steering clear of strong odors – that will cause nausea
  • Prescription medication – for extremely bad nausea, your physician will write a prescription for Diclegis or Zofran (with close medical monitoring only)

When to Consult a Doctor

Although nausea is typical during pregnancy, occasionally it can be worse. If you:

  • Vomit all day and are unable to keep food and fluids in.
  • Have pregnancy sickness nausea-induced weight loss.
  • Feel dizzy, faint, or get dehydrated.
  • Your nausea persists through the first trimester.

These are signs of hyperemesis gravidarum and must be addressed.
